How to Find Out What Theme a Shopify Store Is Using

There are three reliable ways to identify a Shopify theme: an automatic theme detector, the page source, and the browser console. All three read the same data that Shopify publishes on every storefront.

Method 1: Use a Shopify theme detector (10 seconds)

Paste the store URL into the Shopify theme detector. You get the theme, the version, whether it comes from the Shopify Theme Store, plus the apps the store runs. We have already torn down 48 stores you can browse by theme.

Method 2: View the page source

  1. Open the store in Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
  2. Right click anywhere and choose View Page Source (or press Ctrl+U, Cmd+Option+U on Mac).
  3. Press Ctrl+F and search for Shopify.theme.

You will find a line like this:

Shopify.theme = {"name":"Holiday launch","id":1234567890,
  "schema_name":"Dawn","schema_version":"15.0.0",
  "theme_store_id":887,"role":"main"};

schema_name is the real theme (Dawn here), schema_version is its version, and name is whatever the merchant called it. A theme_store_id means the theme is sold in the Shopify Theme Store.

Method 3: Use the browser console

Open developer tools (F12), go to the Console tab, type Shopify.theme and press Enter. The browser prints the same object as above.

When there is no theme

If you cannot find Shopify.theme but the site still uses Shopify checkout, it is a headless store. Brands like this build their own storefront with Hydrogen or Next.js. Our detector labels these as headless and shows the framework when it can tell.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the theme name look strange?

Merchants can rename their theme in the admin, so you might see names like "Live - Black Friday v2". The schema_name field shows the original theme it was built from, such as Dawn or Prestige.

What if there is no Shopify.theme in the source?

The store is probably headless, built with Hydrogen, Next.js or another framework on top of Shopify. Headless stores do not use a Shopify theme at all.

Can I buy the same theme?

If the theme has a theme_store_id, it comes from the Shopify Theme Store and you can buy or install it there. Otherwise it is a custom or third-party theme.
